“There is only one decisive victory: the last.”

-Karl von Clausewitz

The noise had finally ended, the terrible cracks and roars and angry booms. The earth began to seem still again, and safe for walking. Slowly, they began to poke their heads out from under the cover, greeting the day as it turned into night. Clouds rolled in, making the hot angry eye go away. And water began to fall.

They walked out together, all moving the same way. Slowly at first but then picking up speed. The smell of the burning and the flesh drawing them on. The need to see where the noise was and what had happened. They had heard it coming, felt it here and there, but never like this before. And this was not close and scary, it was far away and much stronger.

Where the noise came, the fleshy ones were always there. They brought it with them, made it, and kept making it until they were rent to pieces and consumed. With noise so bad, there had to be many of them. And they were not bringing it to the caves this time, with their fire and pain. This there they were doing somewhere else, to someone else. They had to see…

Over the hills they went, through the trees, out into the open. The rain fell hard here, the smoke and wind rising to meet them. They looked down into the low place, where the fleshy ones lived and kept them away with weapons that spit hot fire and terrible flying things that dropped it from the sky. The fires were raging in their homes right now. The screaming birds silent and unseen.

Looking about, they sniffed the air and tasted the delicious aroma. The flesh was down there, burning, hot and pungent. They tasted the blood, searing and wet. They began to move fast once again, leaving the hills and trees behind and taking to the fields.

Some, then more, then many, walls and walls of them moving from all ways towards the valley and its delicious flames. They came from all around, every hill, every cave and every forest, the taste on their lips and begging to fill their empty bellies.

So many in one place, no much flesh smelling sweet and waiting to be eaten. They could not resist. After so much hiding, they would finally fall on the fleshy ones and rend them all, sucking their blood and peeling the hot meat from their bones.

And for once, the fleshy ones did not seem to notice. Too preoccupied with their own noise and consumed by the smoke and flame of their own making, they were not in the fields or the edges of the valley-home when they came to it at last. As they neared the first of the squat, square buildings, no fires came to meet them.

All began to move quicker and moan louder as the taste of an impending meal loomed before them…
